iOS 5 hero
Apple covered a lot of ground today unveiling the new features of iOS 5. Take a look at the remaining new top features that will be included in iOS 5.

Updated Mail

The updated mail application in iOS 5 will now allow for message flagging and draggable email addresses. Messages can now be flagged as important so that users can keep track of that important meeting with the boss or follow up email.  Instead of writing an email address twice for the To: ,CC: , or BCC: fields in OS 5 you can now drag the email addresses from one field to another. Text can now be indent in email messages for those that still want to look professional or are sticklers for grammar.  Rich Text Formatting is also included in iOS 5 so bold, italics, and underlining can now be applied to message text.

Newsstand

Newsstand consolidates and delivers all a person’s digital magazine and newspaper subscription content in one place.Newsstand, which has a nearly identical look to iBooks, lets users easily download the latest edition of their favorite magazine or newspaper.  Newsstand will also download new editions of purchased digital subscriptions for easy online and offline reading from everything from Vanity Fair to Popular Science.

New Safari and Safari Reader

Safari has been updated to include tabbed browsing and the desktop version of Safari’s reader feature is coming to iOS 5 devices. Safari Reader allows people view only the main content of a web page without any distractions. For instance, the banners, ads and sidebars of most blogs or news sites is stripped away leaving only the main article and relevant pictures. For the first time users will also be able to email the safari reader content instead of link to the content.  Articles and web pages can also be saved to a reading list for viewing later.

PC Free

PC Free is Apple’s way of saying that’s it finally done away with the need to sync your mobile devices with your computer. Once iOS 5 is release no longer will people have to connect their iPod, iPhone, or iPad to a computer to set it up or update it. All iOS 5 devices are ready to go out of the box and are not required to be connected with a computer. Furthermore all future updates following iOS 5 will be delivery Over-the-Air (OTA). Apple’s new PC Free strategy also fits in perfectly with their new iCloud service as well. Mobile devices with iOS 5 will also support wirelessly syncing with iTunes every time they are plugged into a power source.

Game Center Update
The update for Game Center now lets iOS device owners download games directly from the Game Center App instead of launching the App Store. Apple has also added support for turn bases games.

Reminder App
iOS 5 Reminder App

Now you don’t have any excuse to forget that milk at the grocery store ever again, because Apple has created a new Reminder App for iOS 5. The Reminder App does exactly what it sounds like – allows people set reminders and to-do lists. The great thing is that the Reminder App integrates fluidly with the iOS Calendar and desktop calendars like iCal or those used in Outlook. User can even set up location reminders and updates that trigger when entering a specific area such as the grocery store. So if there are national milk shortages then blame Apple because no one will forget to buy it from now on.

Minor Updates

As part of iOS 5 the calendar app has also been improved to allow for easier scheduling for specific times and dates. Individual calendars can be renamed and synced with iCloud as well. Multitasking gestures have also been added to the iPad to easily swithc between running apps. Surprisingly AirPlay Mirroring has been added for the iPad 2 which will allow people stream an exact duplicate of what appears on the iPad 2′s screen (including apps) to any television connected to an Apple TV.

iOS 5, Apple’s newest mobile operating system, will be available this fall for the iPhone (3GS & beyond), iPad, and iPod touch (3rd & 4th gen).

Since Apple will be unveiling more about OS X Lion at next week’s WWDC it only seems appropriate that it is covered in detail here. The big selling point of Lion is how it promises to bridge the gap between Apple’s mobile operating system iOS (used on iPhones, iPods, and iPads) and its desktop operating system OS X. The main features announced so far of OS X Lion are:

Updated Apps with Full-Screen Views

In Lion, user will finally have the option of running full screen application natively. The full screen functionality will have to be added to most apps, but Apple has already included the ability to launch its new updated apps in full-screen. The current list of updated full-screen applications that are included with Lion are iPhoto, Mail, iCal, and Preview. Mail has also been revised to look more like the iPad version with a large preview pane on the right and mail list on the right. Mail will support conversation view.

Mission Control

Mission Control is like a supercharged version of OS X’s Exposé feature. It lets users get a quick glance at all of the open and running applications on his or her computer. The application windows are shown as small thumbnails and are grouped by app. Furthermore, with Mission Control users also have full access to the dock and dashboard, which has a been a feature sorely lacking from the current implementation of Exposé.

The Launchpad
For users will full blown iPad envy Apple has introduced the Launchpad feature for Lion. Launchpad replicates the look and feel of iOS navigation by putting all of the users apps on the desktop. Users can swipe between pages of application, arrange them in folders, and launch any app with one click, just like the iPad. Furthermore, applications that are downloaded from the Apple Mac Store will also automatically be added to the Launchpad view.

Multi-touch Gestures
While owners of the Apple Laptops and mutli-touch mice and trackpads have already enjoyed the ability to use gestures to control Snow Leopard, Apple plans on adding additional support for more multi-touch controls. In addition to expanding the arsenal of multi-touch gestures Lion promises to make using those gestures more fluid and realistic.

Auto Save and Versions

Lion also introduces a new auto save feature that saves documents with the same file instead of making duplicates or shadow copies. Along with the Auto Save feature Apple is introducting the new Version control feature. Versions will allow users to track the changes of document since its creatation to the most recent copy. Anyone who has ever erased a document and saved it on accident will know just how useful a feature like this is.

AirDrop and the File Vault

Lion’s AirDrop feature lets users easily share files between computers wirelessly with one click, and Lion’s new File Vault offers XTS-AES-128 bit encryption for internal and external drives.

Release Date and Appstore

The tentative Summer 2011 release date for OS X Lion was announced at Apple’s October event last year. Apple is expected to announce an official release date and distribution plans for OS X Lion at WWDC on Monday June 6.  The current circulating rumor is that OS X Lion will depart from the company’s normal disk distribution method and will instead be released as download on the new Apple Mac App Store that launched for Snow Leopard on January 6,2011.
